BOOK REVIEW

Ingo
Helen Dunmore
Fantasy

Saphire, Connor and their father, Matthew loves the ocean. Their mother hates the water. One day, Matthew goes on his boat and doesn’t come back. No one can find him or his boat so they just assume he is dead. One night Connor goes to the caves and not knowing Saphy goes alone and sees Connor there with a girl. Saphy doesn’t know who the girl is. When Connor disappears again Saphy knows he went the caves to meet that girl again. Saphy goes to the caves. She sees a boy like figure and he gives her a hand signal to come over. Slowly she walks towards him. As she gets closer she sees that it’s not Connor. He’s on a rock and asks Saphy to climb up to him. When Saphy gets up she realizes that the man was a mermaid. He asked if she was looking for Connor and she said yes. They introduced each other and Faro said that Connor is with his sister somewhere. Faro brings Saphy to the ocean and teaches her how to breathe under water. He shows her a shark but tells Saphy not to worry because the shark is a small eater. Saphy’s mother is seeing a man named Roger. Saphy does not like Roger but Connor doesn’t care. One day Roger goes scuba diving with his friend Grey to try and find part of a ship’s Hull. What they don’t know is that there are Lion Seals that protect Limina, an underground palace. The seals think he is attacking. Saphy and Connor know about this but don't say anything.

In the book Ingo, there are three main characters. Connor and Saphire Trewhella and Faro. Connor the son of Matthew Trewhella. He loves the ocean and swimming. Saphire is Connors younger sister. She also loves to swim. Faro is a mermaid that Connor and Saphy meet in Ingo. Ingo is a place in the ocean. Faro watches over them when they are in the ocean. Saphy and Connor are young teenagers and Faro is an adult. Saphire and Connor are important in this book because they two in very few who have the ability to enter Ingo. Faro is an important person in this book because he helps Saphire and Connor through their time in Ingo.

Ingo, is about Family relationships. Matthew, Connor and Saphy’s father went missing. Everyone thought he was dead but the children. Connor and Saphy never doubt that he is dead. They walk around the shores and look for him. Months after Matthew went missing or “died” their mother started dating this guy named Roger. Saphy’s mother tells the children to move on with their lives. This book makes me think about how a little girl and her older brothers do so many courageous things.

This book made me think that no matter how small or big you are it is what is inside what counts. Saphy, a little girl was courageous and same with her brother Connor. Connor and Saphy are heroes. They saved Roger and Grey from the lion seals. I have learned that you have to trust in your family in friends to help you when you are in trouble and you should always have an open and creative mind.

She can't stop thinking that her father will return.  When Saphy and Connor walk by other kids Saphy and Connor can see them whispering and when Saphy and Connor come closer they stop.  a girl named Josie Sancreed, didn't whisper and went right up to Saphy and Connor and sasid "everyone thinks your dad drowned, and they feel really sorry for you, but my mom says most likley he's gone off with another woman."A seagull comes and sings a song that their dad always use to sing.  Connor thinks its a sign from Faro and Elvira that they want them to go to Ingo.  Connor wants to go alone but Saphy won't let him, so she goes too.

chapter 11

Connor and Saphy are going to Ingo but their mother stops Saphy because she thinks Saphy is sick.  Saphy thinks that they are not a proper family anymore because her and Connor are always at school and she is always working ever since their dad has been gone.  On their way they run into Granny Carne. She doesnt think that Matthew drowned and that he will show up somewhere because he knows coast like the back of his hand.  They find out that Carne knows about Ingo and the Mers.  they talk about it for a bit then Granny Carnes not there anymore and Sadie is.

chapter 12

Saphy brings Sadie home but doesnt want to leave her there alone because Jack wont be back till later. they are thinking about all the stories and how Granny Carne new a person 100 years ago. Saphy was talking about how her dad told her about the man who vanished with the mermaid.  Connor wanted Saphy to cut off her hair because when she is in the water she looks like one of them mermaids. Mermaids hate divers because they think they are spies.

chapter 13

the chapter starts with t hem eating dinner and how Matthew use to tell them stupid stories. they were told that Roger was going to diving to find part of a ship.  Connor and Saphy were talking about how Mers dont like divers.  Connor wants Roger to teach him how to dive but Saphy doesnt like Roger and tells Connor that he doesnt need air to go into Ingo and gives the impression that she doesnt like Roger.  Connor tell her that its not about her its about their mom.  She's so much more happy and alive.  Connor likes Roger and told Saphy to give him a chance.  At the end of the chapter Saphy starts to doubt that he father isnt coming back and she reminds her mother about him because she looks like him.

Journal #3

Saphire

Saphire, the main character had long brown hair, loves to swim and loves her brothers friends dog. Saphy is courageous and will do anything to keep her brother safe and out of trouble. She would never break a promise unless it was for good. Connor, Saphy’s brother is helpful to her because when they were climbing down the rocks to get to the beach. Her mother trusts her. Saphy is important in the novel because she is one of millions who can enter Ingo along with her brother, Connor. I would love to be Saphy because she can breathe under water, go to a world of mermaids, and talk to sea gulls. Iwould like Saphy as a friend because we both love swimming in the ocean.

Journal #2

The book Ingo, is written is first person. Saphy, the main character is the one telling the story.  The point of view is effective while reading the story because it makes it more interesting and its like someone is telling the story of there life to you. One of the most important events that have gone on in the book Ingo is when Saphy goes to the caves and sees Connor there with a girl.

Connors point of view:

I know that dad is somewhere out there. I can feel it and if he was dead, his body would have shown up some where.  After lunch i went to the cave.  I wanted to meet that girl again. While i was sitting there talking to her, she asked me to go for a swim.  As i was about to jump into the water I heard Saphy yell me name.  I looked around and saw that she was running towards me telling me it was tea. I wonder if she saw the girl?
